Like many anglers the concept of travelling light just doesn't seem to apply with me. Even as a teenager when I could only get to waters I wanted to fish on foot or by public transport I always insisted on carrying an amount of gear that would make a Sherpa think twice all because of the thought of "what if?"
I have been a big fan of Shimano reels since I first bought an Aero GT 6010 about 15 years ago. There just seems to be something about their gears, clutch and bearings that just make them so reliable and smooth to use. Unfortunately after 10 years in my loft my old 6010 hasn't faired too well. It's nothing that can't be repaired and I will be sending it off for servicing but at the moment the bearings screech a little when under pressure and the reel just feels clunky which is evident in the line lay which isn't quite right and I'm getting more than the average number of tangles.
A few months ago I was fishing my favourite lake of the Pulborough AS owned waters, Moore Farm, and was using my much loved Daiwa Whisker Carbon Match Rod. Now admittedly this rod wasn't really the right rod to use at this lake as it is a match rod with a very soft action and whilst perfectly suited to whipping out Roach and Bream, isn't really suitable for pulling out Carp. The trouble is that I guess I'm an old fashioned fisherman at heart. Whilst I do own a Pole and two carp rods with bite alarms etc I much prefer to leave them in my rod holdall and simply use a float rod as, for me, there is nothing to beat watching for the tip of your float to suddenly be pulled under the surface of the water.
In December 2006 I started to suffer from a bad back which was so bad that I was off work for 4 months. Fortunately my back, although still painful at times, is a lot better and when I decided to start going fishing again I just assumed that I was going to use my old Fox Recliner chair.
I quickly discovered that the Fox Recliner really is not the chair you want to sit in if you have a bad back! Due to it's design I found that the vast majority of the time I was slumped in the chair, leaning forward and curving my back in all the wrong places.
