Saturday August 30th saw the start of the Shoreham Airshow 2008. As I had previously attended the 2004 show I was very much looking forward to this one, however the weather in August has been nothing short of awful and so there was a big question mark over weather we would bother to go as the £20 each entrance fee was too much to loose if it were to just rain all day.
Thankfully August 30th was not only one of the few dry days this month but actually a beautiful day with blue sky's, a gentle breeze and high temperature. The actual display started at around 11:30am but at this time we were still stuck in an almighty traffic jam in which we queued for nearly 90 minutes and so we missed Christian Moullec flying in his microlight with his Geese and Cranes and also sadly missed Caroline Grace fly my favourite aircraft of all time, the Spitfire. Fortunately there were many more Spitfires flying that day.
The last time I came to the Shoreham Airshow I used my Canon EOS-10D along with a 70-300 IS USM lens. This focal length was perfect as it allowed me to get full frame captures and closer, however I sold that lens many years ago and now 'only' have a 70-200 f/2.8 L USM which would have been okay if I could have got right up to the flight line but because it was so busy and because we got there late the position we got meant that 200mm was a bit too short. Therefore, with some reluctance, I had to use the 70-200 with my 2x Teleconverter giving me a focal range of 140-400mm. This certainly got me a lot closer and certainly didn't stop me from taking photos, in fact I shot more on that day than I've ever shot in one day before. On a, what I call, photo day where I specifically go out to take photos I would shoot on average around 300 photos. Today I shot a total of 1427 photos which totaled 10GB and filled up every memory card I own. Most of this was due to the fact that I had my Canon EOS-30D set to High Speed Burst Mode which really rattles off the frames.
I've uploaded a selection of photos to my gallery but here is a smaller selection
