New Lenses

In February 2005 I made a major upgrade to the lenses that I used. Prior to this I used to use: Canon 70-300 IS f/4-5.6 USM Sigma 50-500 f/4-6.3 EX APO Tamron 90mm f/2.8

Canon 24-85 f/3.5-4.5 USM

The Canon 70-300 IS is a nice lens and, for the money, an excellent choice but it does lack a bit in sharpness even with the IS turned off. I had only had the Sigma 50-500 for a few months and although the flexibility of this lens is great I found it too slow to auto focus in a number of situations.

Understanding the markings on lenses can be confusing for anyone especially as manufacturer's will often use different terms for the same feature. Also the increasing popularity of Digital SLR's now means that many more people are making the leap from compact cameras to SLR's where lens terminology also differs. So I thought I would produce this guide to lens markings. To begin with, lets take a look at two sets of markings you will find on all lenses.

When I bought my first DSLR, a Canon EOS-10D, I had a Canon EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM and a Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM. With the 10D's ASPC sized sensor this meant that the widest focal length I had was 38mm which, lets face it, isn't exactly wide. Although I don't often shoot what would be considered to be landscapes in the traditional sense of the word, i.e. rolling hills or rocky cliffs under a dramatic sky, it quite quickly became evident that I needed a wide angle lens.

Lowepro Stealth Reporter D300AWI seem to be constantly hunting for the right camera bag and have gone through something like 7 or 8 bags trying to find the one that is right for me. I've tried Rucksacks, Sling style bags & Shoulder bags, huge bags, tiny bags and everything in between but nothing really seemed quite right. Big bags where too heavy for hours of use, small bags didn't hold enough equipment and whilst Rucksacks were great for hiking they were a pain at all other times. So could my new bag, the Lowepro Stealth Reporter D300AW be the perfect bag for me?
